Understanding Your Type for Lifelong Health

Without looking at any list — describe your body honestly. Not how you wish it were. How it actually is, consistently, across years. How do you gain weight? How do you lose it? How quickly does your mind move? How do you respond to stress, cold, heat, disruption? Your answers already contain your constitutional type.
At iSoul, our Body Wellness pillar is built on one foundational truth: your body is not your friend's body. Have you ever followed the same diet as someone you know — eating the same foods, the same quantities, the same schedule — and had completely opposite results? This is not a failure of discipline or metabolism. This is your body insisting that it has its own nature, its own requirements, its own intelligence. Understanding your configuration is the beginning of health that actually lasts.
The Story Behind the Science
In the late 19th century, a French physician named Claude Sigaud classified his patients into four body types based on their responses to different environmental stresses. Around the same time — and entirely independently — Ayurvedic practitioners in India had been working with three fundamental body configurations for 3,000 years. In the 1940s, American psychologist William Sheldon described the ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. Three systems. Separated by centuries and continents. Reaching remarkably similar conclusions. The body is not one generic machine. It is a spectrum of constitutions, each with different strengths, different vulnerabilities, and different requirements for optimal function. The most expensive personalised medicine in the world is simply this: knowing which one you are. |
A 2020 BMC Medicine study analysing genetic, metabolic, and microbiome data from 600,000 individuals found that personalised dietary approaches based on individual physiological characteristics produced significantly better health outcomes than population-wide nutritional guidelines. A 2019 Nutrients paper found that matching exercise type to constitutional body type improved adherence, performance, and health outcomes significantly compared to generic prescriptions.
The concept of a single optimal diet for all humans is one of the great myths of modern nutrition. Every body is a different conversation. DR MARK HYMAN — FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE PIONEER

The 7 Configurations— In Full
Type 1 — Vata / EctomorphLean · Light · Fast-moving | Naturally lean, difficulty gaining weight, quick creative mind, tendency toward anxiety, dry skin, light sleep, irregular appetite. Health vulnerabilities: nervous system disorders, digestive irregularity, depletion. Optimal: warm, grounding, nourishing diet — cooked grains, root vegetables, ghee, warm soups. Exercise: gentle and rhythmic — yoga, walking, swimming. Key practice: consistency and grounding — regular meal times, oil massage, early bedtime. |
Type 2 — Pitta / MesomorphMedium build · Muscular · Good metabolism | Athletic build, strong digestion, natural leadership, ambition, tendency toward irritability and inflammation, acidity, intensity. Optimal: cooling, hydrating diet — cucumber, coconut, sweet fruits, green vegetables, minimal alcohol and spice. Exercise: moderate intensity — cycling, swimming, team sports. Key practice: cooling — Sitali breath daily, time near water, regular rest from competition. |
Type 3 — Kapha / EndomorphSolid · Stable · Strong constitution | Naturally heavier build, slower metabolism, calm and patient, tendency toward weight gain, lethargy, emotional heaviness, congestion. Optimal: light, warm, stimulating diet — spices, bitter greens, legumes, minimal dairy and sweets. Exercise: vigorous and varied — running, HIIT, strength training. Key practice: stimulation — dry brushing, intermittent fasting, vigorous morning movement. |
Type 4 — Vata-PittaCombined airy-fiery constitution | Slender but athletic, high energy, intellectually driven and creative, prone to burnout and inflammation simultaneously. Requires grounding (for Vata excess) and cooling (for Pitta excess). Often pushes to extremes — working intensely, eating erratically — until the body forces a stop. A calming morning routine including nourishing food and breathwork before the day's demands begin is essential. |
Type 5 — Pitta-KaphaCombined fiery-earthy constitution | Strong, muscular build, good endurance, competitive drive with natural stability. Prone to inflammation and weight gain simultaneously. Often highly successful professionally but carries metabolic tension and excess weight. Needs: regular seasonal detoxification, moderate exercise combining cardio with strength, anti-inflammatory diet rich in greens and spices. |
Type 6 — Vata-KaphaCombined airy-earthy constitution | Often presents differently at different life stages — lean and anxious when Vata predominates, heavier and slower when Kapha dominates. Seasonal adjustment is the primary medicine: Vata protocols in autumn/winter (warm, grounding, stabilising), Kapha protocols in spring (light, stimulating, mobilising). |
Type 7 — Tridoshic (Sama Prakriti)All three doshas in near-equal balance | The rarest constitution — considered the most resilient but also the most sensitive to disruption. Can tolerate most foods and exercise types but is the first to feel disrupted by seasonal changes or inconsistency. Primary medicine: Ritucharya (seasonal routine) — adjusting diet and lifestyle with each season. Consistency and attunement to natural rhythms are this type's greatest health allies. |
Ayurveda says: know your nature first. Then, and only then, will you know what truly nourishes you. The most expensive supplement cannot replace that knowledge. Surbhi Taylia
